The combination of sun, colourful flowers and vegetation, miles of beaches and tempting sea were things only dreamt of in most English households. As one would expect from any team representing Yorkshire in the 1930s and with George Hirst as manager the cricket was taken seriously, however, and the youngster gained much valuable experience playing in such glaring light and on such hard, fast pitches. He was particularly impressed with the exuberance and enthusiasm of the local players and crowds. One man in particular stood out, the great George Headley, who was in the top three of the world’s batsmen along with Bradman and Hammond. His technique and range of strokes were readily noted. The choice of George Hirst as manager was an inspired one as he knew how to combine seriousness on the field with a more relaxed attitude off it and he was enormously respected by all the players as an understanding and tolerant coach. The trip was a very happy one in all respects with the players coming home refreshed, ready for the coming season. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 34.
