Famous Cricketers No 65 - Len Hutton
against the bowling of Morris Nichols when Essex inflicted a defeat of embarrassing proportions on the eventual champions. At Hull in the previous season Nichols had bowled him for 0 and 4, so he was rapidly becoming Len’s most dreaded opponent. His return to something like his normal form came in the middle of August at Headingley when he scored 131 against Middlesex after having received some very kind words of encouragement from that county’s great batsman, veteran Patsy Hendren. Two games later, in his last appearance of the season, he scored a most creditable 92 against the MCC in the Scarborough Festival. Because of his health problems, his bowling, so promising in 1934, was scarcely utilised, but his fielding continued to delight. He had played one game more than in his debut season, but he had scored over 300 runs fewer at a lower average. He was thrilled at the end of the season to be included in a Yorkshire party to go on a short tour to Jamaica. The prospect of a journey into the sun to restore him to full health was a wonderful prospect for the nineteen-year-old. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 17.
