He had been selected as leader of the twelve-man strong team that left Southampton on 21st September 1876. Although this was the fourth team to visit Australia from England it was the first to play first-class matches as all previous tours had consisted of games against odds. On the trip as a whole the team played twenty-three matches matches (won 11, lost 4, drew 8) of which three were of first-class status, the two games ranked subsequently as Tests 31
