Famous Cricketers No 63 - A.O.Jones

The South Africans were also touring this season. In their match with Nottinghamshire they had a first innings lead of just 15. Jones and John Gunn put on 142 in 120 minutes for the fifth wicket. This is still a Nottinghamshire record against South Africa. Jones declared and the tourists were set 255 to get in 130 minutes. They made 203, L J Tancred playing splendidly for 100 not out in 90 minutes. Nottinghamshire would probable have lost by an innings to Middlesex at Lord’s had it not been for Arthur Owen’s skill and determination. He batted for 80 minutes on a difficult pitch. Iremonger and Oates apart, the Notts batting was very poor. Wass and Iremonger restricted the Middlesex lead, Nottinghamshire fared little better second time around, Middlesex lost early second innings wickets but J.W.Hearne and E.H.Hendren engineered the victory. Nottinghamshire lost at home to Yorkshire, despite having a first innings lead of 116. Jones and Hardstaff put on 122 attractive runs for the second wicket. Arthur Owen made his 96 in 180 minutes, slow going for him. Nottinghamshire bowled accurately. When they batted again, Iremonger was the top scorer with 26 runs. Jones was run out by the Yorkshire captain, Sir A.W.White. On the last day, Yorkshire needed 232 to win with 9 wickets in hand. There followed a grim tussle between bat and ball. Against Lancashire at Old Trafford, Jones made his last 50 of the season. The match was affected by rain and although Nottinghamshire had the best of the play, it had to be abandoned as a draw. He made the highest score of the match and played by far the best innings. He and George Gunn put on 66 for the first wicket. This was his last opening stand of 50 or more. On a dead wicket, no one else was able to stay with him in a stand of any size. Lancashire would have been required to make 228 to win, more runs than had been achieved in any of the three completed innings. In the return match, Jones batted virtually one handed, having split a finger. In the home match against Gloucestershire, his batting figures mask a fighting performance on a bowler’s wicket. He made the two highest scores in the match and his aggregate was 3 times that of anybody else’s. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 442.
