No batsman reached a thousand runs, while only Wass took 100 wickets. James Iremonger had 82 with a slightly better average. After losing to MCC, the county beat the Australians, Surrey and Sussex, as well as Leicestershire twice, before suffering their first defeat. The initial promise was not maintained. Nottinghamshire beat the touring Australians, despite being behind on the first innings. Riley bowled well when the visitors batted again and Notts were set 213 to win. Arthur Owen and George Gunn put on 99 for the first wicket in good time. This was the nearest the county ever came to a century opening partnership against Australia. In the away win over Leicestershire, the home team were dismissed on a good wicket by steady bowling from Wass, Iremonger and Riley. Overnight rain then made the pitch difficult and Jones came in at 84 for 4. He batted with assurance while John Gunn played a cautious game. They put on 130 runs in 140 minutes so that Notts were 137 ahead on the first innings. Further steady bowling ensured that only 7 runs were needed for victory. The home win against Sussex was concluded in just over a day’s play. Winning the toss did not help Sussex as Tom Wass took 6 wickets for 16 runs, bowling unchanged with Iremonger. Jones and George Gunn made 75 in 65 minutes, while Alletson hit 3 sixes and 2 fours. John Gunn played a sheet-anchor role while a succession of partners hit out at the bowling. Wass again bowled unchanged, and although more expensive, took 7 further wickets. 75
