This gave them 45% and placed them in fifth position. Jones and George Gunn passed a thousand Championship runs, Payton and Hardstaff were not far off, while John Gunn, James Iremonger and Alletson each made over 500. Wass took a hundred wickets while Iremonger had 76 for a better average. Arthur Owen got the season off to a flying start by scoring the only 50 in the home win over Surrey. The bowlers on both sides had a field day on a drying wicket. Little more than 50 overs were needed for both first innings, with 28 by E.G.Hayes being the highest score. The situation changed dramatically when Arthur Owen batted for a second time. He gave a superb display of batting all around the wicket. He hit 9 fours and put on 90 with James Iremonger in 80 minutes. The rest of the Notts batsmen took heart from their captain’s example, making sufficient runs for the bowlers to be able to dismiss the visitors with runs in hand. Wass took 14 wickets in the match. Nottinghamshire lost heavily away against Northamptonshire despite Arthur Owen making the only century of the match and Joe Hardstaff making the next highest score. The two put on 197 in 135 minutes, Jones hitting 14 fours. This was not sufficient, however, to pass the Northants first innings total. The home team made a reasonable score second time round. The Nottinghamshire batting collapsed in the fourth innings, only Hardstaff and Alletson managed double figures. Nottinghamshire might well have won their home match against Yorkshire, a feat they had not achieved for 19 years. Arthur Owen, again, scored the only century of the match. He used 7 bowlers, including himself, during the Yorkshire first innings. Notts batted without distinction when it came to their turn. When the visitors batted a second time, E.J.Radcliffe felt confident enough to declare and set Notts 355 to win, well over twice what they had made first time round, in 310 minutes. Arthur Owen set his side a splendid example, driving, cutting and taking on Hirst in a display of defiant batting. After Iremonger had gone for 7 runs, the total at lunch on the third day was 161 for 2. 194 further runs were needed in three hours. Jones scored at a tremendous rate. His most spectacular hit was a six over square leg. Jones also had 13 fours, five of them coming in one over off the bowling of 69
