Famous Cricketers No 63 - A.O.Jones

their bowlers were unable to make much of an impression on the Australian batsmen. V.S.Ransford made the only century of the game, while J.H.King made the top score for England with 60. England put up an poor performance in their second innings, Arthur Owen was top scorer and eight batsmen were dismissed for single figures. Jones and MacLaren doubled the score by putting on 41 in 50 minutes. Jones was then given out to doubtful lbw decision The Australians went on to win the series by winning the third Test, the last two being drawn. Nottinghamshire were well beaten by Middlesex at Lord’s despite a first innings lead of 35. P.F.Warner and Frank Tarrant opened the Middlesex second innings with a stand of 121 runs. When the latter had 37 runs on the board, there was an appeal for lbw against him. Fred Roberts the umpire, the old Gloucestershire fast bowler, at first gave Tarrant out but then changed his mind. This incident lead to an exchange of letters in the national Press between Jones and Warner. The former suggested that Tarrant had shown his displeasure at the initial decision, thus causing the change of heart, while Warner insisted that Tarrant had given no indication of discontent. The reinstated batsman went on to add 101 to his score and Warner was then able to declare. E.B.Alletson was top scorer in the second innings with 24 and Edward Mignon took 7 wickets for 55 runs. Nottinghamshire returned to their winning ways during the home match against Lancashire. None of the visitors made 50 in their first innings. The Notts fielding and catching was excellent. Jones and Iremonger put on 122 runs for the first wicket in brilliant style. By the end of the first day’s play, the home side were only 91 runs behind with 9 wickets in hand. Iremonger batted soundly for a century, Hardstaff and Payton both passed 50 and Jones declared with ample runs in hand. James Iremonger followed up his batting success by taking 5 wickets while the fielding was again of the highest standard. If Nottinghamshire could have reproduced this form more often, they would not have languished so far down the table. Arthur Owen made his team’s highest score during their defeat by Yorkshire. On a soft and slow wicket, he put on 62 with Iremonger. Jones was not well, but batted brightly to give his side a good start. Notts were 91 for 6 when Alletson came in and made 27, the second highest score of the innings. Yorkshire were set 45 to win. They needed 23 overs to achieve this, during which time, Wass and Hallam took 6 wickets and a further batsman had to retire hurt. Nottinghamshire gained a home victory over Gloucestershire, mainly due to forceful batting by James Iremonger and the bowling of Arthur Owen. Nottinghamshire had a first innings lead of 142 runs. James Iremonger forced the pace, making his century in 110 minutes. This allowed Jones to declare. Gloucestershire were 333 runs behind and had four hours in which to bat out time on a good wicket. Jones caught Salter brilliantly at short-leg and then put himself on to bowl for the last over before lunch. He clean bowled J.H.Board with his first ball and had two wicket-maidens to his name before he conceded a run. He bowled his leg-breaks with such admirable length and control that he took 8 wickets in 21 overs. The visitors were all out in 140 minutes, with time to spare. Arthur Owen was cheered by the spectators as he left the field at the end of the match. These wickets represent just over half his tally for the season and it was the best bowling performance of his career. Arthur Owen had not taken 5 wickets in an innings since August 1901 and he never again achieved this feat. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 379.
