Famous Cricketers No 63 - A.O.Jones
would have been different had Jones remained in good health throughout. Plum Warner also commented, “but he smoked too many cigarettes.” On the last day of 1908, the A.O.Jones Trust Fund was closed to further contributions. Donations had been limited to 10 guineas. This fund had been set up by the Nottinghamshire Committee and was in addition to the public subscription for the team as a whole. At its close, the Trust had £1577 12s 5d. £900 of this was spent on the purchase of property in Vernon Road, Nottingham. £600 was invested in a three and a half percent conversion loan and £25 went in to a War Loan. The aims of the Fund were to support Arthur Owen during his life-time and to benefit Mrs. Jones and her children thereafter. Professional cricketers could expect to be awarded a benefit after ten years of loyal service. The financial outcome, though, always depended upon the weather. In order to try to over come this, the Nottinghamshire Committee established a Benefit Fund and put £300 into it over a period of 6 years. The accrued sum was to be divided equally between John Gunn, George Gunn, A.W.Hallam, J.Iremonger, T.W.Oates and T.G.Wass. The Fund matured in 1913 and each player received £506.
