Several important professionals, J.T.Tyldesley, T.W.Hayward and A.F.A.Lilley failed to accept terms. Professionals were paid £300 with first class travel, all accommodation and £2 per week pocket expenses. George Hirst wanted another £100 to go. Many of the leading amateurs were unable to tour, due to business commitments. They had a hard act to follow. P.F.Warner’s party of 1903/04 became the first of four sides to regain the Ashes in Australia. The party left Tilbury aboard the SS Ophir on 20th October.
