As a result, they were the outright county champions for the first time since 1886, when Alfred Shaw had been captain. They had shared the title with Lancashire and Surrey in 1889, under J.A.Dixon, and did not win it again until 1929, under A.W.Carr. Their next title win after 1929 was in 1981. The feud with Kent was still continuing and Notts did not include Worcestershire on their match list until 1921. One match against Yorkshire was limited to 75 minutes’ play, while the other was abandoned without a ball bowled. The weather, as so often, had a bearing on the outcome of the Championship. The summer was damp and provided ideal conditions for the bowling of Wass and Hallam, who maintained their form and avoided any serious breakdown. Both bowlers passed Wass’ previous county record of 140 wickets in a season. These two bowlers between them took 298 championship wickets for less than 13 runs each. Hallam was top of the national averages and Wass was 4th. Both were selected to be one of Wisden ’s Five Cricketers Of The Year. Between them, they bowled almost four-fifths of the Notts overs. The bowling was backed up by superb fielding, match after match. Everything which Arthur Owen had been demanding of his fielders came to fruition. Day after day, John Gunn at cover point, George Gunn at mid off and Joe Hardstaff in the deep fielded as though the team’s success depended solely upon them. Tom Oates had another wonderfully consistent year behind the stumps. Sides were dismissed for reasonable totals because catches were held and runs were restricted. Good team work was established in a side which was basically the same all through 55
