This was the first occasion since 1901 that they had more defeats than wins and was their lowest position since Arthur Owen took over the captaincy. There was no single cause for this deterioration other than a general lack of consistency in batting and bowling. Tom Wass injured a finger so badly in a local match that he missed 8 county matches. He headed the Notts bowling averages again but only took 66 wickets. Many counties operated talent money schemes for their professionals. A.O.Jones introduced a mark system, similar to Lord Hawke’s one for Yorkshire. Each mark was worth five shillings and Jones awarded 4 for a 50, 8 for a century and 12 for 150. The bowlers got 4 for 5 wickets and 10 for 8 in an innings. He operated the mark system for the rest of his captaincy. The average wage of a factory worker was about £1 a week at this time. Nottinghamshire played two matches before the Championship started. They lost heavily to a strong MCC side and then took part in an entertaining draw with the Australian tourists. The visitors lost Trumper, Duff and Hill for 14 runs, before recovering. Jones was top scorer in the first innings, putting on 105 with G.Gunn. Trumper made amends in the second innings, with 61. When Darling declared Notts were set 304 to win in 210 minutes. At one time they had an outside chance with 200 runs and only one wicket down. Jones batted superbly, taking on the fast bowlers. He put on 73 with Iremonger and then 139 with George Gunn to establish a record second wicket stand for this fixture. 48
