The batting was vastly improved on the previous year, but the bowling fell away. Tom Wass failed to maintain his form although John Gunn had a better season. Arthur Owen had a wonderful year. This was the only time that he scored 2,000 runs in a season and it was also the only time he passed 50 wickets. He also held 30 catches for the first time in his career and achieved his first stumping. Prior to 1901, 9 batsmen had between them passed 2,000 runs in a season on 22 occasions, so that it was still quite a rare event. In 1901, Arthur Owen was one of 9 batsmen to pass this milestone. His season started with two appearances for W.G.Grace’s London County, which played first-class cricket between 1900 and 1904. His batting was modest and, although he had some success with the ball, he was never asked to play for them again. In the match at Bristol, Arthur Owen made a brilliant display of batting, hitting 9 fours and making 95 runs in 130 minutes. He shared in a second wicket stand of 120 with William Gunn and was out cutting at a wide ball. His 73 in the second innings was almost as good, during which he put on 100 with C.E.Dench. Despite Jessop’s hurricane 76 in the first innings, Nottinghamshire set 31
