The batting by Shrewsbury, Jones and William Gunn was even more consistent than previously, but the bowling was not strong enough to bring matches to a successful conclusion. J.R.Gunn took 54 wickets and Wass took 45. William Attewell, nearing the end of his distinguished career, took 19 expensive wickets. Arthur Owen had a wonderful season with the bat, bowled with some success, particularly in August, and fielded well all year. By the end of May, his highest score of the season was the 31 he made against Surrey. In the next match, at Bristol, he went in at number 2 with Shrewsbury and made 250 runs in four and a half hours. He batted faultlessly until he was 184. After that, he gave several chances. Jones batted defiantly and his favourite scoring strokes were the cut and the straight drive. 24
