Famous Cricketers No 63 - A.O.Jones
front. This is particularly true in his cricket but is also characteristic of the rugby he played. Although he was on the winning side and fielded with distinction, the batting honours went to Grace, Ranjitsinhji and Jackson and the bowling successes were attributed to Grace and Sammy Woods. At Hove he made a breezy 76 against Sussex in the first innings in useful stands with Shrewsbury and W.Gunn. Notts might well have won had it not been for the weather. His only century of the season came in the home match against Kent. Shrewsbury was also in fine form and the two of them put on 223 for the first wicket. Jones was first out, having made 127. This beat the existing county record of 183 which Shrewsbury had set with Richard Daft 20 years earlier. Arthur Shrewsbury went on to make 172, while J.R.Mason made 131 for Kent. The match was left drawn after three days play in which 963 runs had been made for the loss of 29 wickets. Whilst playing against Gloucestershire at Bristol, Arthur Owen took 7 wickets in the match. This was his highest tally to date. The Notts team was under strength and the home team won by 307 runs. Gloucestershire were one of A.O.’s favourite teams and his record against them is impressive. In the drawn home match against Middlesex, he not only scored a sparkling 70 runs but took 5 wickets in an innings for the first time. The visitors batted first and despite a century opening partnership between J.Douglas and A.E.Stoddart, were all out for 283. A.O. bowled more overs than any other Notts bowler in the first innings and took five of the first seven wickets to fall. He opened the batting with Shrewsbury, who made 9 in a first wicket stand of 46. Jones was then out for his 70 runs with the total standing at 85 for two. The unexpected hero of the Nottinghamshire batting was, however, the wicket keeper Arthur Pike who made his career highest score of 66, batting at No. 9. Further bowling success came in the home match with Sussex where Jones took 6 wickets in the first innings and 9 in the match altogether. During August he took 23 wickets at an average of just over 23 runs each. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 56.
