At the end of May, however, he scored centuries against Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire. England lost the First Test, Barrington finding Griffith difficult to handle. Unknown to friend and foe alike, he was suffering an acute mental and physical breakdown. His doctor recommended an immediate holiday, but he continued playing and had a bad match at Lord’s. He then took a holiday at Bournemouth and returned to the Surrey team at the end of July, scored a century against Lancashire and still finished fourth overall in the national averages. During this season, the first innings of some County Championship matches was restricted to 65 overs. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 450.
