Faced with these spartan conditions, a number of players opted out of the venture. Barrington played in 7 Tests and 10 other matches to average over 90 in the Tests and nearly 70 over all. He was a great favourite with the crowds introducing comedy into some performances by mimicking other players such as Mackay and Sobers. His humour off the field was greatly appreciated by his team mates and the nickname of “The Colonel” was born. The series against India was lost and no longer could England afford to take a second XI to this part of the world. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 281.
