In the First Test he kept wicket for a short period whilst Murray was indisposed, but when fielding at slip dropped both Lawry and Simpson. From then on, at his own request, his days as a regular slip were numbered. In the second innings of the First Test, he took part in a long partnership with Dexter to save the match. England lost at Lord’s but won at Headingley. In the match at Old Trafford, England lost after letting Australia off the hook, setting up a battle at the Oval. Unfortunately, this match petered out to a draw. Barrington added 172 with R.Subba Row despite having a fractured wrist (which he did in the previous match, Surrey v Middlesex) and this was his last match for the season, where he finished top of the national averages and second in the Test averages. In a summer of frequent collapses, his reliability in the middle order could not be overestimated. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 257.
