Famous Cricketers No 62 - Ken Barrington

1958 After a winter spent coaching in South Africa, Barrington had a very poor season, scoring just over 1100 runs at an average of 31. This was the watershed year for him. Dropped by Surrey for the home match against Lancashire, he was run out for a duck on his return against Yorkshire. He spent the remaining weeks of the season endeavouring to correct the mistakes in his batting and decided that radical changes were required as he was being dismissed too often by in-swing and off-break bowlers and being caught on the leg side. He decided to take fewer risks and become a grafter. He was to become an “averages” man, a less exciting player to watch but a dependable anchor man in whatever side he played.
