Goddard bowled left arm accurate over the wicket seamers and it was this defect in his game that persuaded Barrington to change to a more open two-eyed stance. Scoring centuries in consecutive matches saw Barrington being awarded his county cap and a week later being selected for his first Test match. Like many a great batsman before him, he failed to “trouble the scorers” on his debut. He was retained for the Second Test at Lord’s, but then lost his place and it was to be four years before he played for England again. However, Barrington made his full contribution to Surrey in retaining the County Championship. Although at this stage of his career Barrington had not done much bowling, he was asked to bowl in the Festival game at Torquay in September and took more than five wickets in an innings for the first time.
