Hall participated in two of these without accomplishing very much. The heroes were Rohan Kanhai and Seymour Nurse who batted brilliantly despite the gloomy weather (which had most to do with two of the matches being left drawn). He acquitted himself nobly in that affair, recording 26 runs and 5 wickets. The remaining six games were all played against the Australians who suffered their first defeat in the Caribbean. The West Indies won the Test series 2-1. It was their very first series triumph against the Aussies and gave them the unofficial world championship in cricket for the first time as well. Hall captured only 16 wickets in the series but he led the West Indian bowlers with an average of 28.37 per wicket and was most instrumental in his team’s victory at Kingston. It was there, in the first Test (his 107th game) that he became only the seventh West Indian bowler (following S.G.Smith, Constantine, Ramadhin, Valentine, Sobers and Gibbs) to exceed 400 wickets in first-class cricket. In that same match also, Hall moved past Valentine (139) into second place among all West Indian bowlers. He finished the series with 148 wickets in 33 Tests, just 10 short of Ramadhin’s record (158 in 43). Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 106.
