Famous Cricketers No 61 - Wes Hall
20th Test, the second of this series, he became only the third West Indian bowler to achieve 100 Test wickets. He reached this milestone when he trapped Rusi Surti lbw in the second innings. Hall’s batting also showed surprising improvement, as he averaged over 50 runs per innings for the only time in his entire career. He struck a bold 88 for Barbados against India, his highest score for his native island, and achieved his second (and last) Test fifty in an unbroken stand with Worrell (73 not out) that yielded 98 runs. This remained a West Indian record for the tenth wicket until Carl Hooper and Courtney Walsh eclipsed it in May 1993 by adding 106 against Pakistan at St. John’s, Antigua. In the Barbados match, Hall also shared a record partnership of 87 runs with Tony King (89) that remains intact to this day. It is still the best ninth-wicket stand for Barbados against the Indians. The latter never adapted properly to Hall’s extreme pace during the tour. They were also overwhelmed by the versatility of Sobers who registered 424 runs (ave: 70.66), 23 wickets (ave: 20.56) and 11 catches. They lost the series by the embarrassing margin of 5-0. It marked the first occasion on which the West Indies accomplished such a ‘black wash’, as it came to be called in the Caribbean. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 62.
