He thus played his lone first-class match this summer as a member of the Commonwealth XI which defeated an England XI by 41 runs. His contribution, however, was negligible. The game, in effect, was won by Bill Alley, R.E.Hitchcock and Sobers who together registered 300 runs and 17 wickets. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 53. He made an enormous impact, capturing more wickets than anyone else (43) and thereby setting a new record for Queensland in this competition. The old state record of 39 wickets had been established by Len Johnson in 1949/50. Hall’s 40th victim, caught by S.C.Trimble at square leg, was Charlie Guest of Victoria. To mark the occasion, the ball was mounted by the Queensland Cricket Club and presented to the grateful bowler by Len Johnson himself. It was largely due to Hall’s efforts that his state finished second to New South Wales. He failed to take 10 wickets in any one match but came close on three occasions. He accounted for five (or more) victims in four innings and enjoyed a particularly successful afternoon against South Australia when he achieved figures of 6/29 (including Sobers’ wicket). He twice took 9 wickets in matches against Victoria, once finishing an innings with 7/76. In his 56th first-class match (against Victoria at Melbourne in December), he took his 200th wicket by bowling R.A.Gaunt for 0. At the crease, Hall recorded only 166 runs from 12 innings but made a few useful scores, such as his 43 against Western Australia at Perth in mid-December. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 54.
