Famous Cricketers No 60 - Ernest Tyldesley
127. August 8, 1919: Lancashire v Nottinghamshire E.T.’s innings of 67 adds to 64 in the Lancashire book; the Notts book reveals a final 3 has been omitted. 140. June 5, 1920: Lancashire v Leicestershire Tyldesley’s score is shown as 65 in the Lancashire book but adds to 64; this latter is his correct score (per Wisden ) and agrees in the totalling. 158. August 21, 1920: Lancashire v Worcestershire The recopied Lancashire scorebook states that the match ended at 4.20. on August 24. It was in fact over in two days and ended on Monday, August 23. Second wicket stand between E.T. and H.Makepeace taken to be 174 as per recopied scorebook (1-6, 2-180) though Wisden and the local and national press consistently talk of E.T. making his 106 out of a stand of 166. The Lancashire scorebook version has been accepted though it is impossible to prove. (Worcestershire book missing). 159. August 25, 1920: Lancashire v Essex Another Lancashire copying error; E.T.’s score adds to 88, not 92. The Essex book shows the missing “1 1 2” in the stroke sequence. 162. May 7, 1921: Lancashire v Northamptonshire The Lancashire scorebook states the game ended on May 10. The press confirms the Wisden version as ending on Monday, May 9. 171. June 8, 1921: Lancashire v Hampshire E.T. scored 43 (second innings) but his strokes total 42. No Hampshire book is available, so accepted 43 as correct, but without proof. 175. June 22, 1921: Lancashire v Glamorgan The Lancashire book shows f.o.w. as 6-106, which is impossible since 106 was needed to win; the Glamorgan book confirms it was actually 6-105. 176. June 25, 1921: Lancashire v Middlesex The Middlesex scorebook confirms Tyldesley’s score of 34 as correct per the stroke sequence; the Lancashire book includes an extra 2 and adds incorrectly to 36. 188. August 27, 1921: Lancashire v Essex The Lancashire scorebook includes a 3 in E.T.’s first innings strokes and adds to 166; the Essex book shows this stroke to be a 2 and confirms 165. 216. August 5, 1922: Lancashire v Yorkshire E.T. actually out 9-111 (Yorkshire book), not 8-111 (Lancashire book); it was Kenyon who was out at 8-111. 252. August 8, 1923: Lancashire v Nottinghamshire The Lancashire book has E.T. wrongly caught by Payton; the Notts book, Wisden and The Cricketer all confirm it was Hardstaff. 259. September 3, 1923: H.D.G.Leveson-Gower’s XI v West Indies Accepted that E.T. scored 97 though the Yorkshire scorebook sequence of strokes only adds across to 96. 284. July 16, 1924: Players v Gentlemen Whilst it was widely reported in the press that the substitute who caught Tyldesley was Lee, it has not proved possible to ascertain which member of the Lee family was on as sub for Percy Fender! 316. June 3, 1925: Lancashire v Essex Considerable confusion arose on the second morning between the two county scorers; E.T.’s scoring strokes bear little resemblance for a short spell. Though the press refer consistently to a stand of 99 between him and Frank Watson, the f.o.w. would indicate a stand of 94 (2-102, 3-196) though this is not supportable when the scores are set out vertically. Oddly, E.T.’s total score of 77 is not affected. 318. June 10, 1925: Lancashire v Glamorgan The Lancashire scorebook says that the match finished on the 3rd day but the press confirms that it was over on Thursday June 11, the 2nd day. Both scorebooks confirm that E.T. caught Ryan in the Glamorgan second innings, whereas Wisden , The Cricketer and all the press reports seen give the catch to Hopwood. Must accept the scorebooks since they agree. 86
