Famous Cricketers No 60 - Ernest Tyldesley
with Lancashire in deep trouble at 3 for 3. The Times reported that “E.Tyldesley came in and Lancashire’s batting instantly shed its feebleness.” By the interval they were 16 for 3 with E.T. 12 not out. At this juncture, however, further torrential rain caused the total abandonment of the game. He then missed the match against Sussex which followed but, in circumstances mirrored in Brian Statham’s final appearance in Ken Higgs’ Benefit match some 32 years on, he returned for the Surrey game which had been allocated as a benefit for Jack Iddon. Despite some elegant strokes he fell to the second new ball, being caught at the wicket off an outswinger from Eddie Watts. With Surrey being required to follow on there was no second innings for Ernest Tyldesley and so, rather abruptly, ended the career of Lancashire’s greatest ever run gatherer. Wisden , in its review of the county season, cryptically commented that “Unhappily for W.H.L.Lister when taking the reins Ernest Tyldesley, after two early appearances, did not feel equal to playing...” It would seem that the captaincy issue was probably behind his decision to retire.
