Famous Cricketers No 60 - Ernest Tyldesley
five hours and a quarter, hit 22 fours and, in partnership with Jack Iddon, equalled his own and Makepeace’s county record of 279 for the third wicket in just 220 minutes. All told he had scored 504 runs for two dismissals inside nine days! There followed a short barren patch - including two games where he failed to score at all - after which he took over 200 runs off Derbyshire. On the first day his 134 came out of 218 for 4 and his 71 was scored in under two hours. Wisden waxed lyrical: “Sound defence combined with skill in placing the ball and in cutting gave distinction to each display”. Then, as so often, he followed one good performance with another, this time taking 196 off the touring Indians at Old Trafford. He drove and pulled with tremendous power and his 4 hours 20 minutes stand with Watson for the second wicket yielded 327 runs. After the disappointments of the Test Trial and losing by an innings to Yorkshire (despite his own twin fifties) it was the middle of August before his next 100. It came against Middlesex and took 210 minutes, Tyldesley sharing in a stand of 193 with Paynter. This provided the prelude to a magnificent match performance against Warwickshire, to atone for his earlier failure; his 160 lasted almost four hours and he gave just one chance at 63. It was the fourth time in the season that he had scored over 200 in a match, a personal record. His eighth and last 100 came in the final match against Nottinghamshire, where he “not only defended with exceptional skill but on occasion hit hard” ( Wisden ). But Harold Larwood had the last laugh; for the second time in the season he bowled E.T. twice in a match; this only happened to Tyldesley nine times in his entire career and Larwood was the only bowler to repeat the feat.
