Not only did he play in all Lancashire’s games but, at the age of 43, he was selected for the Test Trial which was played at Cardiff Arms Park. Unfortunately this match was ruined by rain and he never got to the wicket. Despite the total abandonment of the county game against Surrey in May, he still amassed over 2,400 runs at an average of 59, whilst adding eight more to his tally of centuries. He was into his stride immediately with an innings of 61 against Worcestershire, though it was not until the fifth game that he surpassed this score. His 85 not out against Kent assisted Eddie Paynter (159) in a stand of 195 in 145 minutes and soon afterwards at Leicester his patient 63 in 165 minutes helped Lancashire recover to 136 all out. By complete contrast he cut loose in the next match - for him a rare outing against a University side - with 124 against Oxford. He shared a stand of 153 with Jack Iddon in 100 minutes and his off drives and leg-side strokes brought him 17 boundaries. He had added a further 60 to this in the second innings when stumps were drawn. Just a week later the match with Hampshire was, according to Wisden , “redeemed by two admirable displays by Tyldesley”. His splendid first innings 79 was quite outshone by his subsequent 122 not out as Lancashire pushed for a declaration; his stands of 98 with Frank Watson and 115 (unbroken) in 85 minutes with Iddon featured particularly fine driving as he collected 3 sixes and 11 fours. Hard on its heels came a fine knock of 78 against the All India XI (his stand with Paynter putting on 196 in 145 minutes) and his rich vein continued with a magnificent 225 against Worcestershire. He batted for 56
