Famous Cricketers No 60 - Ernest Tyldesley
undefeated 256. He scored 29 fours (plus a five and a six) and though he gave chances at 170 and 181 he drove powerfully and made many fine square cuts; with Jack Iddon he put on 223 for the third wicket in 150 minutes. It was to be the highest score he ever made. Further great innings followed; there was a third century against Glamorgan, Tyldesley coming in at 16 for 1 after Lancashire had been inserted; another double century stand with Iddon saw Lancashire declare at 236 for 2. In the next game against Yorkshire he batted in more restrained fashion, taking four hours over his 107, and despite failing in the next two games he stroked a splendid 151 not out against Leicestershire which helped to secure another innings victory. On the second morning he scored 98 out of 167 in 95 minutes, featuring in a remarkable sixth wicket partnership of 147 in 75 minutes with Eddie Paynter. This was the last of his seven centuries, but he contributed a valuable 79 to the return victory over Kent at Dover and further useful scores of 61 and 48 to the next two drawn games. At 41 he had played a major role in his county’s fourth Championship title in five years whilst taking part in all their 32 matches and heading their batting averages. Although no longer under consideration for the Test matches, he moved back up the national averages to tenth place. A statistical oddity; when he was caught by Leslie Ames off Maurice Nichols a second time in the final match against the Rest it was the third occasion in the season that he had been dismissed in identical fashion in each innings, having twice fallen lbw to Clarrie Grimmett at Liverpool and twice being bowled by Ewart Astill at Nelson. Indeed, given Lancashire’s form it was in any event rare enough for him to be dismissed twice in one match - it only happened nine times all told! Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 484.
