By June 17th he had, the Glamorgan match apart, produced few innings of consequence; his 547 runs, scored at an average of 32, had been considerably fortified by his performance at Cardiff where his two centuries (the second undefeated) had transformed his figures; without this game, his 330 runs at just over 20 - including the ignominy of a first ball “Roses” dismissal - would have looked feeble indeed. Then, from June 21st when Lancashire entertained the touring Australians, he grew in confidence so much that from this point to the end of the season he scored a further 1,357 runs at an average in excess of 61 and, in the course of so doing, he surpassed his previous record individual score. By the end of June he was, according to Wisden , “in quite his best form” while “driving with fine power” in an innings of 117 against Championship leaders Kent; his stand of 206 for the second wicket with Frank Watson helped Lancashire to an innings win of considerable significance. Soon afterwards on July 12th at Old Trafford he batted for just over six hours against Warwickshire to make an 51
