Famous Cricketers No 60 - Ernest Tyldesley

Reinvigorated by his winter triumphs in South Africa he displayed excellent form from the outset and had already completed his 1,000 runs in the nine weeks up to July 8th when he was struck down with appendicitis; the resulting operation put him out of action for the remainder of the season, which Wisden recognised as potentially his best to date. He began with some major innings, only one of which he converted into a century; this was his 110 not out in three hours against Worcestershire at Aigburth. However, after a less successful spell in the middle of June, he took 114 off the Nottinghamshire attack at Trent Bridge (he hit 14 fours and was ninth out), drove particularly well in scoring 109 in 150 minutes (with a six and 13 fours) at Cheltenham and then returned to Aigburth for an innings of 82 during which he and Charlie Hallows put on 214 for the second wicket against Sussex. And that was where it stopped. Having looked set for more representative honours, his 16 games were, as it transpired, all for his county. As his season ended in disappointment he could hardly have imagined that, at the age of 36, he stood on the verge of his greatest achievements. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 310.
