Nor did he have much luck with his benefit match which immediately preceded the Edgbaston Test. He chose the game when Middlesex visited Old Trafford during the celebration of the Lancashire club’s Diamond Jubilee (1864-1924) but the weather precluded any cricket on the opening day and restricted play on the second to a mere 80 minutes. In the circumstances he did well to collect £2,458, a tidy sum at the time. After another fairly modest start to the season his fortunes picked up with a useful 75 at Lord’s and then blossomed with an outstanding game against Kent. His undefeated second innings 148 occupied five hours during which he hit 16 fours and gave but a solitary chance at 67; he shared a stand of 135 with Frank Watson for the third wicket. The “purple patch” came towards the end of June, his 433 runs in 10 days encompassing hundreds against Leicestershire and Sussex. In the former game he shared in a magnificent stand of 185 in two hours with Charlie Hallows, who himself recorded two undefeated centuries in the match. Two 70s and a 50 earned his Test cap but August was a barren month save for 100 against Warwickshire (on an outfield slow from heavy rain) and a 72 at Hove. By contrast with his earlier performances against Kent the fixture at Dover provided him with his second and last “pair” of his career - the other instance back in 1913 was against the same opposition!
