Trailing by 251 on the first innings, they had only reached 134 for 4 by the close of the second day; but already E.T. was 81 not out. Wisden then recounts that he played “one of the finest innings of his life. He hooked and pulled with astonishing certainty and his off driving was scarcely less remarkable.” He gave no chance of any kind and his 236 (out of a total of 444) occupied five hours - the game was saved. Yet on only two other occasions did his second innings score reach 50 and again he lacked inspiration in the end-of-season Festival games where, after a first innings 97 against the West Indies, he subsided to 116 runs in nine completed innings. He had made a solid start to the campaign, although it was June before he posted his first century; during this 114 against Glamorgan he scored 44 of the 46 added for the 7th wicket with George Duckworth. His second came off the same attack shortly 28
