Famous Cricketers No 60 - Ernest Tyldesley
1922 Though he topped 2,000 runs in a season for the first time, his average fell back from 49 to 41. With no overseas touring side to play he missed only one Lancashire game, that being when he was selected to represent the Players against the Gentlemen at Lord’s in July. As things turned out he would have been well advised to restrict his appearances to County Championship games only, since his 49.41 average in this competition tumbles to an overall 41.69 when the 142 runs from 11 completed innings in his six other forays are introduced. The month of May saw him twice reach 90 without going on to a century, but his luck turned in June with a superb innings of 178 against Yorkshire which Tyldesley himself considered his finest. He helped Lancashire to 165 for 1 and was eventually last out at 307, having hit 24 fours and 2 sixes in an innings lasting four and a quarter hours. This was followed immediately by a chanceless innings of 166 against Kent, which embraced stands of 112 with Makepeace and 155 with Watson for the second and fourth wickets respectively. There then ensued a relatively barren spell of almost seven weeks during which he only twice passed 50; his form eventually returned when he dominated Lancashire’s second innings against Surrey at The Oval at the end of July. Yet his 111 ended unfortunately, the ball rebounding off Strudwick’s pads for an involuntary stumping! He followed this up with a sound 79 on a rain-affected Old Trafford pitch against Gloucestershire and in an unbeaten second innings match-winning stand of 129 with Charlie Hallows he made 53, the lowest score for which he was never dismissed. A successful week on the South coast in late August brought him 364 runs for only three dismissals, including a fighting 64 against Sussex when he was seventh out at 96; the second innings of 261 saw him carry his bat for 128 made in 190 minutes with 18 fours. Two major innings at Dover followed - his 81 came in a stand of 112 with Makepeace - but it was his 84 against Essex back at Old Trafford which realised his attainment of the 2,000 runs landmark.
