His consistency was outstanding and his reward came with his first Test cap at Trent Bridge against Warwick Armstrong’s powerful Australian side. For Ernest Tyldesley, now 32, this was only his second representative game. Yet it was not a happy occasion. Beaten for pace by Gregory, he chopped the first ball he received on to his stumps. Worse was to follow; he had helped take the score from 23 for 1 to 41 for 1 in the second innings when, in trying to score from a fast long hop, the ball hit him in the face and thence rolled on to his wicket. He was helped from the field but not seriously injured. When, after a relatively moderate spell, he suffered a broken finger in the match against Middlesex at Old Trafford, it looked as if his season was disintegrating; but, resuming in style against Kent and Surrey, he was recalled for the Old Trafford Test where he produced a scintillating display in scoring 78 not out. This ensured his selection for The Oval Test also but his best performances were reserved for the closing county games. After a whirlwind 128 not out against Nottinghamshire he went down to Leyton a week later and scored a century in each innings of a match for the first time in his career. His first innings of 165 took the score from 25 for 1 to 368 for 9 and he followed it up with an undefeated 123 in the second; it was also the only occasion in his career that he bowled in both innings of a match! 23
