Though now established at number 3 in the order - a position he was to retain until 1934 - it was late June before Tyldesley scored his first 100 (169 not out against Derbyshire) and mid-August before the second came along; but this latter was a magnificent five hour 244 against Warwickshire, which stood as the highest individual innings of the season until it was beaten by Percy Holmes’ 302 not out against Hampshire on August 30th. It did mean, however, that for the seventh consecutive season Ernest Tyldesley had surpassed his previous highest first-class score. A week later he was again at his very best, recording 106 against Worcestershire whilst adding 174 for the second wicket with Makepeace in 100 minutes. Further scores of 92 and 73 enhanced his reputation as the season drew to a close. His progress was finally recognised with his selection for the Rest of England side to oppose County Champions Middlesex at The Oval in September; it was his 161st first-class match and, at the age of 31, his first for any team other than Lancashire. In a massive total of 603 for 5 declared he scored a very respectable 66, partnering Jack Hobbs in a second wicket stand of 162 in a mere 75 minutes. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 133.
