Despite exhibiting, according to Wisden , “little of his brother’s brilliance on the offside ... his onside play is very strong indeed.” The turning point of the season came in June; having started with a “pair” against Kent, he scored a whirlwind 97 against Gloucestershire and followed it up with three hundreds in four games including his highest yet - 123 - against Nottinghamshire. He shared in two significant stands with his brother John - 177 at The Oval against high-flying Surrey and 149 at Horsham to pull Lancashire round from the dismal position of 15 for 3. Amazingly some archive film footage of the two brothers setting out to the wicket during this stand still survives; it is believed to be the oldest film of any County Championship match in existence. He was now rapidly growing in confidence, frequently playing dashing innings and holding the side together when, as in the return game against Surrey, the ball was turning sharply. The four which took him to 7 at Maidstone on July 21st brought up his 1,000 runs in a season for the first time in his career. 15
