After three games he had scored 253 runs for only twice out. Thereafter his form deserted him; he failed twice in his first “Roses” match and only registered one further score in excess of 40. His 107 against Sussex came at the age of 23, quite a late start for a man who was to achieve a century of centuries; entering at 73 for 4 he shared in partnerships of 186 with Jack Sharp and 107 with Frank Brooke before departing at 366 for 6, having effected the recovery which led to an innings victory. His driving was the main feature, but there was a statistical oddity as well; owing to an overthrow the scoring stroke which brought up this maiden hundred was an 8! Omitted for a month towards the end of the season he returned for the last two games but met with no success; his final average of 25.50 was hugely disappointing after his early promise.
