Famous Cricketers No 59 - Aubrey Faulkner
centuries against the visitors, were strongly fancied to win the Cup. Their side would have been even stronger had not the South African Cricket Association ruled C. B. Llewellyn ineligible to take part, in spite of the fact that he had appeared in all three Tests against Australia with great success. As a professional (he played for Hampshire in the English County Championship) he was deemed not be have resided in the Transvaal long enough to qualify for South African domestic cricket. Faulkner was not chosen for Transvaal’s first two games, in which they beat Griqualand West by an inning and 216 runs, and Eastern Province by ten wickets. Coming in for the third match, against Border, he scored 16 not out and 17 not out, batting at number nine, and did not bowl. Transvaal’s win by 305 runs earned them top place and the right to meet Western Province in the final. Faulkner played little part in his side’s win by seven wickets, scoring eight, bowling five overs without success and holding one catch. However, his average of 41.00, helped by two not outs, put him in second place in the tournament figures behind team-mate and captain Frank Mitchell (53.60). Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 1. However, he was back the following summer when Transvaal successfully defended their title with Western Province again the losing finalists. The format adopted the previous season of first round losers being eliminated was again used, Transvaal knocking out Natal, Griqualand West and Rhodesia (who had byes through the first two rounds) to get to the final. Faulkner did not play in the first three matches, appearing only in the final, which, remarkably, was played in Cape Town, in spite of Transvaal being the holders and having a more convincing record than their hosts. Faulkner, batting at number seven, contributed 35 and 16, and took a wicket in each innings to play a minor role in his side’s third successive finals victory. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 3.
