In two matches against Yorkshire his best effort was an innings of 58 for an England XI - only 27 runs accruing in his other three visits to the crease. He also did little of note for Lord Londesborough’s XI against Kent, making 41 runs in two innings and not being called on to bowl. However, he was the star of the third game, for the Gentlemen against the Players, taking 5/68 in the Players’ first innings and hitting 101 in the Gentlemen’s second innings - these efforts going a long way to helping his side achieve a thrilling six-run victory. His century came at a most opportune time, the Gentlemen having been reduced to 154/8 (a lead of 150) when he was joined by H.D.G.Leveson-Gower, with whom he added 95 for the ninth wicket.
