Famous Cricketers No 59 - Aubrey Faulkner
team playing the other three times. The experiment was not a success, the wet summer, the withdrawal of several leading Australians from the team and the inability of the South Africans to adapt to the conditions, leading to the home side winning easily. For South Africa it was little short of a disaster, five Tests being lost and one drawn. Faulkner, after starting with 122 not out against Australia at Old Trafford, managed only 72 runs in his subsequent ten innings to average 19.40 for his 194 runs. He was more successful with the ball, taking 17 wickets at 26.70, six wickets (2/50 and 4/50) coming against England at the scene of his previous triumph, Headingley. However, his best effort was 7/84 at The Oval in a ten-wicket loss to England. Overall, the tour was a triumph for Faulkner, who became the first, and only, South African to complete the double of 100 wickets and 1000 runs in an English summer, his total of 1075 runs (23.88) and 163 wickets (15.42) earning him his place in history. In addition to his century against Australia he hit 145 not out against Scotland. His best bowling performances were match figures of 11/59 against Leicestershire (his career-best), 11/67 against Scotland, 10/101 against Cambridge University and 10/153 against Lancashire. Before joining the South Africans for the first match of the tour, Faulkner played for MCC against Nottinghamshire at Lord’s and scored 131 in his side’s victory by an innings and 56 runs.
