He did little to suggest that he would soon be ranked one of the best batsmen in the world, but bowled particularly well in the second match, with figures of 4/34 and 2/28. Faulkner reached the peak of his batting powers in Australia, scoring 1534 runs in all first-class matches of which 732 at 73.20 came in the five Tests – both aggregates created records. He hit 204 in the second Test, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, to record South Africa’s first Test double century. Some 25 years later, the son of Faulkner’s team-mate, “Dave” Nourse, Dudley, who was born 51 days before Faulkner’s epic innings, was to break his record with 231 against Australia at the Wanderers. Although Faulkner found the going tough in the Tests as far as bowling was concerned – his ten wickets costing 51.40 runs apiece, he bowled superbly in the State matches, taking 5/32 and 5/106 against Queensland and 4/55 and 7/26 (his career-best) against Victoria. He dismissed the great Victor Trumper four times. In minor matches he hit a further 546 runs with 252 not out against Barrier District and 117 against Combined Universities his best efforts.
