In his first meeting with the tourists, for Transvaal, he made 46 and 148 not out, and captured 4/49 and 5/34, the Englishmen being beaten by 308 runs. Faulkner was the dominant figure in the series, notwithstanding Ernie Vogler’s record of 36 wickets in the five Tests. He hit 545 runs at 60.55 and captured 29 wickets at 21.89 in the Test matches, which added to his performances in the two Transvaal matches gave him overall figures of 748 runs (68.00) and 38 wickets (18.89) against the tourists. Faulkner made 78 and 123 and took 5/120 and 3/40 in the opening match of the series, and made major contributions in the other four matches – in spite of which South Africa lost two of the Tests.
