They went down 1-0 in the three-Test series, giving their hosts a fright in the Second Test, at Headingley, before losing by 53 runs. The googly quartet of Faulkner, Reggie Schwarz, Ernie Vogler and Gordon White caused a sensation, the four capturing 421 wickets in all games (376 in first-class matches). Only four batsmen managed centuries against the South Africans, two coming in the Test matches. Faulkner topped the tour batting averages with 1163 runs at 29.82 and was fourth in the bowling figures, with 64 wickets at 15.82. He hit centuries against Lancashire (106 not out) and Essex (101 not out) and 107 against Scotland in a non-first-class game. His most outstanding feat was to take 6/17 in England’s first innings at Headingley. By lunch on the first day the home side had scored 34 for one wicket on a damp pitch, but after the interval Faulkner bowled with such skill that the last nine wickets fell for 42, his victims falling in the space of eleven overs. He added a further three at a cost of 58 in the second innings, but not even his great performance could prevent England winning – the crucial moment coming early in the home team’s second innings when C. B. Fry (who went on to make 54) played a ball from him onto his stumps without dislodging a bail. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 18.
