He made two hundreds, against Gloucestershire and Yorkshire and took five wickets in an innings on five occasions including both innings of the match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston. He helped to save the University match at Lord’s, playing an innings of 60 not out in three hours on the final day after Cambridge had followed on 256 runs behind on first innings. After the Cambridge term ended Bailey played for Essex in ten Championship games and in their match against the South African touring team at Southend-on-Sea. He scored 644 runs at an average of 42.93 and took 27 wickets at 36.70. Included in the batting figures was a career best innings of 205 against Sussex at Eastbourne, his second hundred coming in only eighty minutes. He took five wickets in each innings of the match against Derbyshire at Chesterfield. Bailey was selected for Gentlemen v Players at Lord’s, a sure sign his exploits were being noted.
