In his first Championship appearance, against Derbyshire at Ilford, he opened both the batting and the bowling scoring 39 and 3 not out and taking four wickets in the match for 74 runs. Altogether he scored 318 runs in the Championship with a highest score of 97 not out against Worcestershire at Worcester. He took 31 wickets including 6-94 against Nottinghamshire at Clacton-on-Sea and 5-27 against Warwickshire at Southend-on-Sea. He finished in second place in the County’s bowling averages and fifth in the batting. His other first class appearance in 1946 was for Free Foresters against Cambridge University at Fenner’s.
