He played in only 20 of Essex’s Championship games scoring only 466 runs in 33 innings at an average of 17.90. He bowled only 388.4 overs to take 36 wickets at 25.50. He made no fifties in the Championship nor did he have any five wicket hauls. This was the year when a number of County matches had a 65 overs restriction on the first innings and this did not help a middle order batsman like Bailey to build an innings. He had an outstanding all-round game for Essex against Cambridge University at Fenner’s scoring 77 runs and taking nine wickets for 96 runs including 6-41 in the first innings. This was the last occasion on which he took five wickets or more in an innings in a first-class match. His highest Championship score was 31 against Glamorgan at Leyton.
