Now in his 41st year he topped both the Essex batting and bowling averages, scoring 960 runs at an average of 35.55 and taking 64 wickets at 22.18. A highlight of the Essex season was the victory over the touring Australians by six wickets at Southend-on-Sea. Bailey scored five half centuries, highest score 72 not out against Surrey, and took five wickets or more in an innings on three occasions, his best bowling being 6-38 against Somerset at Westcliff-on-Sea. He continued to prove his stamina by bowling 40 overs in an innings against Gloucestershire at Bristol to take five wickets for 72 runs. Towards the end of the season he was selected to play for an England XI against Sir Frank Worrell’s West Indian XI at both Scarborough and Lord’s.
