Famous Cricketers No 58 - Trevor Bailey
averages, his bowling produced only 79 wickets at 29.12. He took 31 of these wickets in the last month of the summer, including his only two five wicket hauls against Gloucestershire and Sussex. Wisden comments that until the last month his bowling had lacked “bite”. As a batsman he hit a century, 122 against Warwickshire, 96 against Northamptonshire and nine other first-class fifties. His finest all-round performance was against Kent at Leyton where he scored 75 and 59 and took, in all seven wickets for 126 runs. Leyton was a happy hunting ground for him as he played an innings of 80 and took seven wickets in the match against Gloucestershire there. At the end of the season Bailey took part in two representative matches, for England against Young England and for T.N.Pearce’s XI against the West Indian touring team.
