He scored 1460 runs at an average of 35.60 and took 125 wickets at 20.59. He was second in both the Essex batting and bowling averages and finished sixteenth in the national bowling averages taking five wickets or more in an innings on no less than nine occasions. He was still the best all-rounder in the country yet he was not selected for any of the Tests against the touring Pakistanis nor for the party to go to Australia in the winter of 1962/63. He made one century during the season, 124 not out against Sussex at Ilford, but he went close on three other occasions making 90 or more against Lancashire, Glamorgan and Warwickshire. He took ten wickets in the match against Gloucestershire at Clacton-on-Sea and nine against Hampshire at Westcliff-on-Sea. At Lord’s in the last Gentlemen v Players match to be played there he took 6-58 in 30.3 overs. Against Surrey at Leyton he took 7-107 dismissing Peter May in both innings and also accounting for Micky Stewart, Ken Barrington and Bernard Constable. Overall it was a fine season.
