He finished fourteenth in the national batting averages and twenty-seventh in the bowling. For Essex in the Championship he finished first and third respectively averaging 40.44 with the bat without the aid of a century. His only hundred of the season came at Brentwood against Oxford University. He had a wonderful all-round match against Yorkshire at Headingley in July when he scored 60 not out and 46 and took twelve wickets for 101 runs being largely instrumental in an Essex victory by 57 runs. On six other occasions he took five wickets or more in an innings including figures of 7-81 against the South African touring team at Ilford. As a batsman he contributed ten Championship fifties, invariably when they were most needed and also held 23 catches. It was another fine all-round season and was rewarded with two representative appearances at Scarborough for Gentlemen v Players and for T.N.Pearce’s XI against the South Africans.
