He also took 100 wickets to perform the double for the fifth time in his career. He finished in second place in the Essex batting and bowling averages and twelfth in the national batting averages. His best all-round performance came at Clacton-on-Sea against Warwickshire when he scored 138 and took seven wickets for 90 runs. He also took part in a tied match against Gloucestershire at Leyton. He took 83 wickets for Essex at 23.36 each taking five wickets or more in an innings on six occasions. His highest score was the 146 he made against Hampshire at Bournemouth.
